Prayer flags are a colourful rectangular cloth used to promote compassion, strength and wisdom. They can often be found strung alongside the trails and paths in the Himalayas. Prayers and mantras are believed to be blown by the winds to spread good will, compassion and bless the surrounding countryside. The different colours of the flags are thought to represent different elements including the sky, wind, fire, water and earth. Blue represents the sky, white represents the air, red symbolizes fire, green represents water and yellow stands for earth. Together they're said to bring health and harmony.
